Shutter Gallery is an art project which aims to support local artists while offering a free shutter makeover to Tottenham businesses, at a time when both the high street and the creative sector have been impacted by the pandemic.

The first shutters were painted in September and October 2020 on Tottenham High Road and West Green Road. We’ve outlined the eight shutters completed so far:

1. Albert Agwa at Hunters (284 High Rd). The piece is based on the owner's love of playing football together as kids. They’ve known each other for 30 years!

2. Javie Huxley at Martinez Butchers (278 High Rd). The artwork is based on the owner’s family members and celebrates the local latinx community.

3. Hannah Elizabeth at Small Boulevard (276 High Rd). This artist’s work often depicts the natural world and her piece is based on the swifts you often see over the nearby Tottenham Marshes.

4. Matt Dosa at MA1 Hair Studio (288 High Rd). Matt’s studio is around the corner from the local business, near Tottenham Green. His bold use of colour and shape creates a dynamic pattern for the shutter.

5. Dominika Lipniewska at True Craft (68 West Green Rd). Dominika is a local illustrator and has done a piece specifically for her favourite local, which she already had made an illustration for. A perfect match!

6. Lana Hughes at Crazy Cut (459 High Rd). Lana is a lettering artist and used an existing work to celebrate the feeling we have after a visit to our local hair or beauty business. She is also a Crazy Cut customer, so another great match!

7. Archie Proudfoot at Tottenham Wine (1A West Green Rd). Archie is also a local lettering artist and has done a design which evokes the idea of sipping a cocktail in the Caribbean, a nod to the vintage advert above the shop (those who know, know).

8. Zoe Alleyne at Tottenham Fisheries (37 West Green Rd). Zoe is the managing director of Bud Studio and has her own artistic practice. She makes colourful figurative work and has done a design specifically for Tottenham Fisheries, celebrating some of the produce on offer.

9. Jenni Allen at Celebration Party Ware (34 West Green Road). Printmaker Jenni Allen is based at Artist Hive Studios, a short walk from White Hart Lane. She wanted to echo the festive nature of the shop by marrying her signature round prints with the bold colours of the shop facade.

More shutters will be painted soon! Watch this space.

The Shutter Gallery project is supported by Haringey Council as part of the Mayor of London Creative Enterprise Zone, and the High Street Recovery Plan. The project is being delivered with Tottenham Hale based Bud Studio. Thanks to Elena Davidson from Zone Arts, a platform supporting and selling affordable art by local artists, for her help with the project.
